Nabucco Tackles Love, Babylon at S.D. Opera
French soprano Sylvie Valayre is Abigaille in San Diego Opera’s Nabucco, premiering this weekend.
You may associate him with Aida, but for Verdi, his first operatic success was found in Nabucco. The story of a love triangle told amid the violence of the Babylonian exile, Nabucco premieres tomorrow at the San Diego Opera, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a lineup of masterpieces. American baritone Richard Paul Fink returns as the Babylonian king Nabucco and American bass Raymond Aceto makes his debut as the Hebrew high priest Zaccaria. Meanwhile, returning after her debut as Tosca last season is French soprano Sylvie Valayre, who sings the role of Nabucco’s adopted daughter, Abigaille. If the vocal pyrotechnics of angst-ridden Abigaille give you an odd shiver of foreboding, that's because this role is so difficult it has become infamous over the centuries for breaking the voices—and careers—of top sopranos.
